In the latest FIFA rankings released for September, Mozambique’s national football team, ‘The Mambas,’ has made a significant leap, climbing five places and re-entering the top 100 teams globally. This achievement comes after a period of absence from the top 100, marking an important milestone for the team.
The team’s recent successes, including a 1-1 draw with Mali and a 2-1 victory over Guinea Bissau, have been crucial in their push for qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. These results contributed to their rise in the rankings, earning them 1226.03 points, an improvement from the 1208.87 points they held in July when they were ranked 104th.
Mozambique’s coach, Chiquinho Conde, expressed optimism about the team’s future, stating they are expected to continue their upward trajectory with a crucial upcoming match against Eswathini. Conde shared his confidence after the team’s recent win over Guinea Bissau, which has brought renewed attention to the Mambas.
Historically, Mozambique was ranked as high as 66th in the FIFA rankings in 1997. The last time they were among the top 100 teams was in 2017 when they held the 97th position. As of now, the team ranks 22nd in Africa.
In the broader context of the African continent, Mozambique holds 14th place in FIFA rankings, trailing behind Senegal, which recently dropped two places in the global standings.
