The University of Rwanda has successfully concluded a two-day workshop aimed at training agribusiness graduates to become champions of the Society of the University Village Initiative (SUVI). The program seeks to equip graduates with the skills to develop solution-driven projects addressing key agricultural challenges in local communities.

Professor Alfred Bizoza, a professor of agricultural economics from the University of Rwanda and a coordinator of SUVI, emphasized the initiative’s impact, stating:

“SUVI is an approach that brings together academia, the community, and policymakers to understand key issues before conducting research. This informs both the university’s research agenda and policymaking at the district level. Our trainees spend 12 months in the field, gaining practical experience, creating jobs, and designing business plans for long-term employment.”

Among the participants, Solomon Uwimana shared his experience, explaining how research led him to address malnutrition and poverty in the Western Province.

“Despite cultivating cash crops, malnutrition remains prevalent in Nyabihu district. As a researcher, I sought a solution and proposed mushroom farming to provide farmers with a daily income and combat stunting,” he said.

Gentile Umutoni, another SUVI champion, highlighted a similar issue in Ngororero District, where farmers grow coffee and tea yet remain impoverished.

“I came up with the idea of pig farming. It is a profitable livestock venture that also provides manure, helping farmers earn money and improve their livelihoods,” she explained.

The trainees also received training on cooperative management and community engagement. Sabrine Umuhoza, one of the participants, reflected on the learning process:

“We are learning how to engage with our communities, communicate effectively, and understand why cooperative members are not progressing. With this knowledge, we will assist them in overcoming challenges and growing their businesses.”

SUVI is a transformative initiative that bridges academia, policy, and communities to address agricultural challenges. By training graduates, creating jobs, and supporting cooperatives, it fosters sustainable development. Since 2017, SUVI has implemented impactful projects, equipping young professionals with practical skills to drive real change in local communities.
