Playing with a child is very important as it helps them feel loved, builds their confidence, and makes them feel valued.
However, despite this, in today’s fast-paced world, parents often struggle to find time for their children as they are busy working to provide for their families. This challenge is even greater among fathers.
Beyond the issue of limited time, in some African countries, some men believe that playing with their children makes them too familiar, leading to a lack of respect.
Despite such perceptions, a study conducted by the University of Leeds, titled Paternal Involvement and its Effects on Children’s Education (PIECE), revealed that when a father plays with their child from birth until the age of seven, it significantly benefits the child’s cognitive development.
The study, conducted over seven years on 5,000 families in the UK, was published in 2023.
It found that children who play with their fathers develop brain function 20% better than those who do not. This, in turn, helps them perform better in school, develop good behavior, and improve their social skills.
Psychologists highlight that the games men often play tend to be more challenging and require strategic thinking. As a result, when fathers play with their children, it stimulates their cognitive development by encouraging deep thinking and problem-solving.
Mothers also play a significant role in their children’s development, particularly in helping them express emotions and stay organized.
Experts advise that all parents should dedicate time to playing with their children, especially fathers, as it greatly contributes to brain stimulation and development. A well-developed brain enhances intelligence, increasing the child’s potential to achieve great things in life.
