Tour du Rwanda to proceed as scheduled, organizers confirm

In a press release released on Thursday, February 6, Tour du Rwanda and the Rwanda Cycling Federation (FERWACY) reassured teams, riders, and fans that the security situation in Rwanda remains stable. Although recent clashes in Eastern DRC briefly affected areas near the Rwandan border, organizers stated that all necessary measures have been taken to prevent any disruption to the race.

The Tour du Rwanda is scheduled to take place from February 23 to March 2, 2025, and will bring together elite cyclists from Africa and around the world.

Areas close to the Rwandan border were momentarily impacted by recent fighting in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, but organizers said every precaution had been taken to ensure the race would not be disrupted.

“Life goes on as usual in Rubavu and throughout Rwanda. As a result, the Tour du Rwanda can continue as planned, and riders, teams, and supporters can be guaranteed that it will be a fun and safe event,” the statement said.

Since its inception in 1988, the Tour du Rwanda has developed into one of Africa’s most prominent cycling competitions. Once a regional event, the race was added to the UCI Africa Tour in 2009 and is now a 2.1 category race that draws top professional teams from all over the world.

The Tour du Rwanda is considered one of the most difficult races on the continent because of its difficult mountainous terrain. In addition to putting riders’ stamina and ability to the test, the race highlights Rwanda’s stunning scenery and dynamic culture.

The 2024 Tour du Rwanda was won by Israeli Joe Blackmore of Premier Tech. He took the lead that day and had an incredible race, even celebrating his 21st birthday. In Kigali, he won the last stage by himself, securing his victory. It was an extremely remarkable accomplishment because it was his first UCI race victory.

In addition to its athletic value, the Tour du Rwanda is essential for advancing travel and the nation’s economy. The occasion unites Rwandans, who fervently line the racecourses to support both domestic and foreign riders, and is a significant source of national pride.
