During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Michael Douglas and Glenn Close reflected on their roles in the 1987 erotic thriller Fatal Attraction.
Douglas, 82, revealed that production executives initially believed Close, 79, was wrong for the role of Alex Forrest, the woman who pursues a dangerous obsession with his character, Dan Gallagher. Despite having already earned three Academy Award nominations at the time, Close requested an audition for the part.
"She came in, and I ask anyone to see this tape, and she blew us away," Douglas stated during the broadcast, acknowledging that the casting team was completely mistaken in their initial assessment.
Close went on to earn an Oscar nomination for her performance in the Adrian Lyne-directed film. During the interview, she discussed the movie's alternate ending, which was reshot six months after primary filming concluded.
The original cut featured her character committing suicide to frame Gallagher, but test audiences reacted negatively, prompting studio executives to substitute the climax with a physical confrontation. Close noted that she initially resisted the change, as she did not view the character as a psychopath, though the revised cut ultimately made the character widely infamous.
Close's upcoming projects include La Bola Negra and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also selected the actress to receive an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards.
